Exploring Solar Energy for Public Housing

With sustainability and energy efficiency becoming critical priorities for urban development, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) sought innovative ways to reduce energy costs while supporting its environmental goals. In partnership with Rhoden Group, NYCHA launched a feasibility study to assess the integration of solar panels across selected public housing developments.

This initiative aimed to provide actionable recommendations for cost-effective renewable energy adoption while ensuring minimal disruption to residents.

Tailoring a Comprehensive Feasibility Study

Rhoden Group approached this project by combining technical analysis with a deep understanding of NYCHA’s operational requirements. The study involved:

  1. Site Assessments: Evaluated structural integrity, rooftop space, and shading conditions across targeted housing units to determine solar panel compatibility.
  2. Energy Demand Analysis: Analysed historical energy consumption patterns to estimate the potential impact of solar installations on utility costs.
  3. Cost-Benefit Modelling: Created financial models to compare upfront installation costs with projected long-term savings from reduced energy bills.
  4. Resident Engagement: Conducted focus groups with residents to address concerns and ensure alignment with community needs.

Findings – Unlocking Solar Potential

The feasibility study produced a roadmap for introducing solar energy to public housing developments:

  • Viable Installations Identified: Approximately 70% of evaluated rooftops were deemed structurally suitable for solar panel installation.
  • Projected Energy Savings: Solar adoption could reduce energy bills for selected developments by up to 25% annually, offering significant cost relief.
  • Low Disruption Plans: Installation schedules and designs were proposed to minimise disruption to residents during deployment.

A NYCHA representative noted, “This study has provided a clear, data-driven foundation for integrating renewable energy into our housing developments, helping us advance both cost savings and sustainability.”

A Greener Future for NYCHA

The success of this feasibility study has positioned NYCHA to secure funding for renewable energy initiatives and explore broader implementation across its housing portfolio. By combining technical expertise with a resident-focused approach, Rhoden Group delivered a practical and impactful plan for advancing energy efficiency in public housing.
